Keep your account recovery options usable

A flat phone battery should not be the end of your recovery plan.

Check your second step

Two-step verification adds protection, but your usual second step might be on a phone that is lost, broken or out of charge. Open the security settings of your most important accounts and check the recovery options before you need them.

Use service-provided backup methods

Many services let you generate one-time backup codes or register an additional method. Follow the service’s instructions and store codes securely. A sealed paper copy in a secure location can be useful; an unprotected screenshot in the same phone may not help if that phone is unavailable.

Keep access controlled

Treat recovery codes like keys. Do not put them on a public emergency contact sheet or share them in response to a message. If you use a password manager, understand how you would regain access to it as well.

Review after changes

Replacing a phone, changing a number or switching email providers can affect recovery. Update the relevant accounts while you still have access to the old method. If you test recovery, follow the provider’s process without unnecessarily locking yourself out.
