Make an inventory before a buy list

You may already own a torch, spare batteries, blankets, a radio and a manual tin opener. Gather the items you can spare into an accessible place, then use the checklist to identify what is missing.

Set priorities

Start with drinking water, food you can eat without cooking and a dependable light. Add household-specific essentials next. A low-cost manual tin opener can be more useful than a gadget with several functions you have never tried.

Spread the cost

Pick up an extra long-life item during ordinary shopping when you can afford it. Avoid buying supplies on credit or spending money needed for current essentials. Small steps still improve readiness.

Borrow ideas, not assumptions

Our buy list describes features to compare. It is not a requirement to purchase from any particular retailer. Check local shops, what you already own and whether a neighbour can share a rarely needed item.

Keep it maintained

Label a shelf or box and rotate food into normal meals. Review the contents when your household changes. A smaller kit you know how to use is a practical place to start.
