Hygiene when the taps stop working

A few basic supplies make hand cleaning, waste and bathroom routines easier.

Put a small hygiene box together

Keep soap, tissues, toilet paper, bin bags, hand sanitiser and wet wipes in an accessible place. Include menstrual products and any continence supplies your household uses. Store cleaning chemicals securely and away from drinking water and food.

Follow the water company’s notice

A supply interruption, a boil-water notice and a do-not-drink notice mean different things. Check the exact instruction from your supplier and your local authority. Do not assume water is safe because it looks clear, or assume boiling removes every hazard.

Think through everyday routines

Decide how you will clean hands before handling food, manage used wipes and keep waste contained. Do not flush wet wipes. If sewerage services are affected, follow your water company’s advice on toilets and wastewater.

Share the practical information

Keep the supplier’s phone number on paper. If someone nearby needs help collecting bottled water, agree in advance how you could assist safely. Do not lift containers that are too heavy for you or store them where they block an escape route.
